Eine Inselkette im Atlantik
Die Outer Banks sind eine schmale und 280 Kilometer lange Inselkette im Atlantik vor der Küste North Carolinas in den USA. Wir waren hier bereits mehrmals mit dem Mietwagen und einmal mit dem Wohnmobil unterwegs. Nun, was soll man zu den Outer Banks sagen? Einmalig, traumhaft und unbeschreiblich schön. Vom Norden erreicht man die Inseln über eine Brücke vom Festland aus – Highway 158 von Pont Harbor nach Kitty Hawk.
Die Gebrüder Wright absolvierten hier ihren ersten Motorflug. Die Inseln sind untereinander von Norden nach Süden über den Highway 12 verbunden. Die südlichste Insel der Outer Banks ist Ocracoke. Von hier geht es mit der Fähre wieder zurück aufs Festland. Der Condé Nast Traveler berichtet hier ausführlich.
